Review: This is the latest and my favourite of the three albums of Satyricon that I own. The band has shown a steady development in style, content and technical musical ability. The songs are tighter, more focused guitar work. The lyrics are catchy, even lending itself to the listener “singing along”, even if its just the odd phrase here and there.
Lyrics deal with the usual trappings of Black Metal, with an abstract, metaphorical interpretation.
Very little filler material here. Each track is completely distinguishable from the others and they all have their own sound texture.
The first four tracks are the best. The others are good, in the context of the album, as there is a gradual winding down of pace, making it a cd worth listening to in its entirety, instead of one track here and there.
Their site is worth a visit at www.satyricon.no nicely put together and they have free mp3 downloads and some music videos. Warning! This stuff is fairly explicit with virgin sacrifice in Mother North. Much nudity and blood and blades in the same scene….
Who Would You Recommend This Album To?: Fans of any Nordic Metal will not be disappointed.
90/100
