MusicReview Talks to Influential Local Blogger – Gabi a.k.a MusicalMover

23 April 2009 5 Comments

We talk music, the local scene and the power of twitter and facebook in the promotion of bands. A must read!

Gabi Goldberg, a.k.a MusicalMover runs a local music promotion blog, which was a runner up in this year’s SA Blog Awards.

ED“So over the next few months, MusicReview will be interviewing a number of local music promoters, in an attempt to determine the ‘new face’ of local music promotion. Gabi, tell us about your blog and what local means to you.”

Gabi – “I started my blog to get what I thought about bands and music out there-I love the fact that I can help promote the local music scene, which is at the moment a rather small one. To me local is most definitely lekker and I think the quality and standard of music being produced is on par with what is coming out internationally!” (ed- cheers to that!)

ED“How do you think Facebook and Twitter and have revolutionized the local music industry?”

Gabi – “I think both are pivotal to a band or an artist’s success as they are ways to keep in touch with fans and measure how their music is being received (by the fans responses). In the digital age I think they are must haves!”

ED“Gabi, you interview loads of local bands and go to loads of gigs. Have you ever thought about getting into band management, or are you a band manager already?”

Gabi – “I’ve thought more about the marketing and the promotion aspect of bands-a band manager? Maybe one day! ”

ED“Do you review albums?”

Gabi – “Not really…I’d like to try my hand at it though…”

ED“Let’s talk about the Coke Fest. How was it?”

Gabi – “Coke Fest was amazing! The bands were brilliant although interestingly enough, the local bands seemed to be more well received than the international ones…”

ED“What do you think of The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Bullet for my Valentine pulling out at the last minute?”

Gabi – “Personally, I think it was rude and it showed a lack of respect for their South African fans.”

ED“Who would you like to see come to the next CokeFest?”

Gabi – “The choices! Well, the Killers, Kings Of Leon and Coldplay would definitely be on my list!” (ed- I reckon Kings of Leon would def be winner. They could sell-out the show on their own.)

ED“What interviews and upcoming posts can we expect on your blog?”

Gabi – “I have quite a few interviews lined up with some brilliant local and international acts, such as Flash Republic, Thieve and Blu Mar Ten. I’ll also be writing posts on what is hot right now in the music scene.”

ED“Where would you like to see the South African music industry in the next five years?”

Gabi – “Ideally I would like to see growth in the local music market-with regards to the number of bands and sales of albums-as well as local acts gaining more exposure nationally as well as internationally.”

ED“Gabi, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. Where can people get in touch with you? Are you on Facebook or Twitter?”

Gabi- “find me on Twitter or on last.fm

    Kick ass interview!

Looking forward to reading your new interviews Gabi!

Interesting that you say the local bands were better received than the international acts, from the reports we were given that’s pretty much spot on! Heard Oasis were terrible, let’s hope that in future the organisers pick bands with serious live performance ability – like Children of Bodom of course ;)

Cool line up-but remember it has to be viable for every-one,and CokeZeroFest is aimed at the rock scene…and those line ups are for more of a Metal Fest…and you guys already know my choices for the line up ;)
