Dear ‘Big Concerts’ – Please Bring Kings of Leon to South Africa

29 April 2009 24 Comments

This is an open letter from MusicReview to ‘Big Concerts’

Dear Big Concerts,

First of all, I wish to personally thank you for being cool enough to actually bring some decent international bands to this country. You have no idea how many dreams you have actually made come true, and how many good, if not best memories you have created for thousands of people around the country. Furthermore, I am eternally grateful to you for bringing The Offspring to South Africa, as during their set, I heard ‘Gotta Get Away’. *Ticks one thing off the list of 100 things to do before I die*

Now, I would really like you to bring Megadeth, Porcupine Tree, Amorphis; or even bands like Pennywise and NOFX to this country, but let’s be realistic here. I know that you have to cover astronomical costs and make some sort of profit at the same time. So, let me tell you about this weird band which seems to be taking over the world.

Kings of Leon are a group of 3 brothers and 1 cousin who eerily share the same surname. They have sold 28 million records worldwide, have released 4 albums and are internationally acknowledged as being one of the most successful bands of the last decade. Girls really like Kings of Leon, and guys like them to. This means that boyfriends will not be dragged to any Kings of Leon gig kicking and screaming. So in this regard, they are not necessarily like Robbie Williams or James Blunt.

Based on their epic South African following (which can be easily deduced by record sales, google.co.za searches, facebook analysis and ringtone downloads), I think that you would easily be able to sell-out shows in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town; without the need for any other international supporting acts. So you wouldn’t exactly need a Coke Fest to sell out their gigs. Speaking of Coke…

I think that you could easily get Coca Cola to sponsor a Kings of Leon gig. Kings of Leon play music which people like to dance to. When people dance they get thirsty and need sugar. When people are thirsty and need sugar, they generally need coke. If for instance, you were to have a coke tent in a venue which say 10 000 people have attended, and you sold each coke for an astronomical R10, and say each person bought 2-3 cokes as a result of dancing and jumping to Kings of Leon, Coca Cola would stand to make R200 000 to R300 000. That’s a lot of money.

Also, Castle beer is good beer when live music is around. Get them to sponsor it too and I will personally start the process of building a beer cup snake.

These ‘snakes’ encourage people to drink, so that they can add their cups to the snake too.

Finally, I just wanted to say that, on a professional level, Kings of Leon are a good band. Their music is distinct, accessible and brilliant. Bring them here. Please.

Dear reader. If you want to see Kings of Leon in South Africa, drop a comment beneath this post.

EDIT: IT’S OFFICIAL. SOME 18 MONTHS LATER, IT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED. KINGS OF LEON ARE COMING TO SOUTH AFRICA!!!
