Blastbeat – Want to Run Your Own Music and Multimedia Company?

2 June 2009 2 Comments

Blastbeat is a highly innovative idea, which encourages entrepreneurship and business management through the promotion of local musicians.

What is Blastbeat?

“Blastbeat is an award winning, fun and exciting, new Teen Music and Multimedia Business project offered to high schools around the world to teach entrepreneurial business skills, promote young musicians, and support youth communities on a local and global level.

Teenagers organize themselves into Music & Multimedia Companies (MMCs), with each member of the company taking on a different job description such as CEO, Sales & Marketing Manager, Talent scout, Web Manager, Video Crew, Photographer, Journalist etc ultimately producing a Battle of the Bands concert in order to identify the best musical talent in their areas. There are 2 competitions in 1, an enterprise competition for the MMCs and a Battle of the Bands for the musicians.

Winning Bands are selected from the school concerts by a panel of industry professionals and progress to Regional/National finals. The winning band at the World Finals in Dublin, receives the prize of a Record Deal with Blastspace Records.”

How does it work?

“Between 6 and 15 students are required to create an MMC (Music & Multimedia Company). Each student takes on a role fundamental to the running of the company. CEO, Sales and Marketing Manager, Finance Manager, PR Manager, Photographer, IT Manager, Journalist, Event Manager / Promoter and Multimedia Manager are just some of the roles available. In addition, there are a number of part-time positions available.

Students in the full time management positions in the company will need to attend at least one meeting per week and undertake specific tasks and assessments which are then graded by the Blastbeat team leaders. Tasks include: setting up a website, formulating a business plan, scouting for bands and musicians, producing and promoting the concert, and creating video, photographic & journalistic content.

The students must work effectively in order to achieve the overall objective of creating and running a successful company and organizing a music concert featuring six bands. Students wishing to participate should be prepared to undertake work outside of school hours and to attend the 3 Coca-Cola Blastbeat concerts i.e. the School Concert, the Regional Final and the National Final.”
