Jason reviews the ‘G3: Live in Tokyo’ DVD

The G3 tour concerts are held almost every year all over the world, and showcase 3 select guitarists (hence the name G3). The first show was back in 1996. Today I am reviewing the G3: Live in Tokyo DVD which is from 2005, which I found in the budget section of Look & Listen.

The guitarists of this particular G3 show are John Petrucci, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. Basically the way this concert works is that each guitarist performs a set of their own, and then towards the end of the concert the guitarists join up together to perform a G3 jam where covers of classics are performed.

John Petrucci starts off the concert, and I must say, what a way to start it off! This man is truly talented! Steve Vai, and then Joe Satriani, perform excellent sets as well. Each guitarist is so skilled its actually incredible. What I like so much about these G3 concerts is being able to see such talented guitarists playing side by side and noticing how each of them have their own unique sounds and ways of playing. The G3 jam was of classics “Foxey Lady” (Jimi Hendrix), “La Grange” (ZZ Top) and “Smoke on the Water” (Deep Purple).

The DVD features commentary by each guitarist sharing their thoughts on the concert and their peers which I found very interesting.

I would definitely say my favorite part of the concert was the set that John Petrucci performed, it has to been seen!

All in all it is a great watch, definitely for any fans of the guitarists playing.
