Review: 30 Seconds to Mars – This is War
Sergio reviews the disappointing new release from 30 Seconds to Mars.

Artist Name: 30 Seconds to Mars
Album Name: This is War
Year: 2009
Genre: Alternative Rock
A lot was expected from 30 Seconds to Mars after the release of 2005’s A Beautiful Lie; and 4 years later, they finally delivered the much anticipated This is War.
Firstly, TIW is completely different from any other 30STM release. It features a vast degree of electronic and synth, as well as the recording of many unconventional sounds, such as an eagle’s cry on ‘Kings and Queens’. While you can appreciate the gutsy decision to experiment with a new direction – sadly, it often fails miserably, as the music is mediocre to say the least.
The only real saving grace for the album is Jared Leto’s voice, which beautifully conveys the zeal and emotion of every word. For example, just listen to ‘Hurricane’ (which also features Kanye West) – the music is distinctly average, but Leto manages to turn it into a masterpiece with his passionate wails.
In conclusion, This is War is just not worth the 4 year wait. Bluntly, it’s a rather forgettable effort.
Best Tracks: ‘Hurricane’, ‘Kings and Queens’, and ‘Alibi’
50/100
