Coke Fest 2010 Cancelled?

24 January 2010 16 Comments

It seems like South Africa’s biggest music festival has been cancelled this year.

While Coke is still due to release an official statement this week, Dionne Domyan from Penny Stein Promotions – the official PR company for Coke Zero Fest – confirmed the news to EntertainmentAfrica.com:

“The sad news is that there is no Coke Zero Fest this year as Coca-Cola are one of the major sponsors of the FIFA World Cup so all their energy (and resources) have been channelled to this event.”

Damn. What a bummer…

This is awesome news! It means Big Concerts won’t be able to f#$% up this event for a 4th time in a row.

    No big loss here.

I’m looking at the positives. I’ve explained this to a few friends and most of them have agreed:

Well-known international bands generally book their tours a year in advance, while Cokefest organisers only really finalise everything a few months before. Since the fest won’t be taking place this year, chances are higher that they’ll be able to get in touch with huge bands for next year’s edition – if they start organising now.

I’m hoping for the same calibre of bands as the first fest :D

Haha, thank the gods that we won’t have to put up with Big Concerts f*&#@ing up the event again this year..

@koile16 I just came back from a gig at Emmarentia dam, run by Oppikoppi. Coke fest should go on. It just should not be run by Big Concerts. Oppikoppi should handle it.

    Thank GOD!

Shoddy setup, bands cancelling last minute, what a balls-up! Plus they have the gall to book the same weekend as Splashy Fen, choking one of our long-running SA institutions for corporate profit.

    I hope Cokefest dies.

Any news on whats happening guys? This is the 1st year I thought of going to cokefest because was to young previous years.
Is it cancelled or not, if not what bands can we expect to be there?

And 2 bands I think that would make coke fest the best is The Used and BFMV.

    Hey Ty,

Coke were supposed to release an official statement in February, but so far no word has come from them. If the festival does happen later on in the year, MusicReview will definitely let everyone know.

On a positive note, let’s get behind our great South African bands this year.

Hey maybe the Killers could come back again for Coke Fest. What is it about Big Concerts and only organising enough toilets for 30 people? WTF? I spend more time watching the bands from the queue for the loo than I do in front of the stage.
