Chromium Part Ways With Guitarist

25 January 2010 32 Comments

Official Press Release from Turning Tricks Entertainment:

Chromium_Group_1

Due to creative differences, Chromium and Matthew Engelbrecht have decided to part ways. Turning Tricks Entertainment and the band would like to thank Matt for his years of service to the band and wish him luck with whatever venture he embarks on.

Taking Matt’s place is a great guitarist from Port Elizabeth, Justin du Preez. Both Jared and Justin played music together in PE, and was the first choice to be the replacement.

We would like to welcome Justin and wish him well on his journey.

    Weak.

All the best to Matt though. I’m sure Chromium and Matt’s decisions are for the best…. More awesomeness coming our way! \m/

  • Bazil said:

    Thats so lame!

It’s kinda sad, Matt always brings so much energy to the shows, but hey I suppose they have good reasons.

    I hope Matt continues playing.

  • Jarred Guns said:

I think Chromium are cool, and Matt didn’t suit the image, you have to have the best to play with the worlds best!!!!!

Me and Justin are going to give Bullet a run for their money!

    Chromium 4 lyfe!

quote… “I think Chromium are cool, and Matt didn’t suit the image, you have to have the best to play with the worlds best!!!!! ”

HA! I am sorry but matt was the Image and the most talented in the band, seen a few of your shows since he left, and you guys have become SO average compared to before. justin is a good guitarist but that is it. cant sing or scream for shit.
Nothing compares to the presence matt had on stage. its very sad that one of my favorite bands became what you guys are now.

    a pity.

and dont make me laugh, you will be nothing like bullet, even less of a chance now

  • Jared Gunston said:

Just so you know that last comment by “Jarred Guns” – was not me!

Everyone has their own opinion on the matter, and it’s in the past now so it doesn’t bug me.

Just please don’t think we were trying to be arrogant or anything cause i’d never talk like THAT.

  • slash said:

if that really is jared gunston then yeah you are arrogant with the way you treat people in less established bands.

but it is a pity to see the crumbling of a once great band.

i suppose all projects fail sometime, try a new one, maybe a solo project, or maybe thats what you have already in chromium

  • Jared Gunston said:

    chromium is far from “Crumbling”

    and nothing has “failed”

  • Jared Gunston said:

p.s. i run a recording studio and have always helped out bands where i can, i put bands i belive in on the bills we play or recommend them to labels, and have had one signed recently. I go out of my way to party with other bands and get to know them. I’m sorry you feel this way but you can ask any of the bands i know or work with, i don’t disrespect or treat anyone badly.

    you clearly don’t know me.

  • Grant said:

Slash, all I can say to you is that you’re a douche bag. It’s really messed up that you actually believe what you’re saying about Jared. If people actually had to sit and have a conversation with Jared, they’d know that what you’re saying is rubbish. If you think Chromium are “crumbling”, then I really don’t know what reality you’re living in ‘cos that’s really far from true! They’re the best metal band in South Africa whether you like it or not.

slash my band has recorded with Jared before. After we did our EP with him we went to England and recorded our album there. The experience with Jared at Gunston Records was a cut above anything I have personally ever experienced in my 8 years as a musician. He does a damn good job and treats everyone regardless of who you are with the utmost respect.

As for Chromium, i love them i known them all for years know and dropping Matt and getting Justin has done a world of good for them. They still sound as awesome as always. Maybe you should try cleaning your ears more, there seems to still be a lot wetness behind them.!

P.S slash, you my friend are an asshole. Now run along your mommy’s calling you for lunch

  • maris said:

JARED IS AWESOME U DOUCHE BAG!!!! hes far from what you think he is. and jus by the way Chromium are the most insane band!

  • Bigradart said:

I’m a photographer in the UK and was asked to cover Chromium for The LT Mag.
I have to say,Jared was the most friendly and amenable person I’ve met!
He and the band even stopped everything they were doing to watch and support the band they were touring with.Circle of Rage
Chromium by the way were awesome!! as were circle.
Having spent the whole night with the bands and having several conversations with Jared,I think you got the wrong Jared.

So Slash!you may want to put a bit more thought into the comments you write about people when you obviously are wrong!

  • Roz LT Mag said:

I have personally known Jared as a mate for a pretty long time, not only that but I have dealt with professionally. I have seen how he has helped bands out in the industry and how he creates opportunities in the industry for not only Chromium itself but for other bands too. If ever anyone has needed advice or help in the industry I always recommend that they speak with Jared, cause he knows what he is talking about. I am good mates with Matt too and he is also awesome at what he does.
What gets to me is that someone actually comes on as Jared Guns and talks shit…??? WTF!
As far as this goes, everyone is entitled to have their own personal opinions, but if you come onto a website and personally attack someone that is pretty lame, especially under a diff name. Grown some balls, contact Jared direct and view your personal opinions…
I really cant handle people going on websites and “twitter”etc badmouthing people to the public… grow up!

  • Jordan Harland said:

This post might be pointless but my name is Jordan Harland. I worked with Chromium on ‘The Last Time’ video and before that had already been friends with them for 2 years. Why? Because they are all brilliant people. The person I warm to the most though is Jared, simply because he’s very outgoing and very accommodating.

I am now in the process of making Chromium’s debut DVD and working on ideas for a new video. I wouldn’t do that if I didn’t like these people so much. I can also tell you that the years of footage that I have, doesn’t contain one instance of them being “douche bags” and certainly not badmouthing former members. I’ve also hung out with Jared and the rest of the band countless times, through all of their member changes and can say that Jared has never said anything like as bad as that about Matt. The two of them still get on quite well as far as I can tell. I can also vouch for the fact that every band he works with love him. He may have fallen out with one or two but to the most part he’s revered.

As for Chromium’s strength, as someone with some of the inside, I can tell you that’s utter crap. They’ve gone a long way with Matt and even more since Matt and they continue along that steady path to something (one day) great.

The “Jarred Guns” commenter created a problem here, I feel. For a start he can’t spell “Jared” so that may have been a clue. Not spelling your own first name properly is something I’ve yet to see.

I’d like to hear what your

Not that Jared needs anyone coming to his defence, but obviously Slash feels a bit intimidated and envious of not only Chromium as a band but more personally of Jared Gunston. For whatever the reason may be, I’ve known Jared for a while, and yes, if you don’t know him, he might seem a little ‘hard’ to comfront because of his great reputation of being a growing successful musician, and talented with his recording studio. But he’s like a version of Kung Fu Metal Panda!!! soft at heart and so much fun! He has my respect, and am sure he, and his band, with their hard work and determination will make SA proud! :-)

  • David Penman said:

To be perfectly honest, working with Jared when we recorded our 3 track ep, was one of the best decisions our band made. Jared is an awesome guy and a brilliant musician. Anyone who thinks otherwise simply has not taken the time to get to know the guy. He and Chomium have done wonders for the local metal scene. Exposing bands and doing recordings. Most epic respect is due to Jared for his conribution to an industry that was slowly dieing. His energy and creative ability are second to none in this country.

  • Jared Gunston said:

i appreciate you words my friends!

    much love to u all

  • Cornél Botha said:

Slash, chum, firstly, using another already established guitarist’s name as an alias is super lame! You must be carefull of what you utter,
i might just lose my temper.
I’ve known Jared for just over two years, he helped me record and produce my EP after a very crap time in my life. He made me feel like a musical prodigy everytime i would play him something, sharing my enthusiasm for my music and we have ever since become very good friends.

Now a friendly warning. Badmouth him or Chromium again and you will need a straw to eat bud. Jared is the most caring person i know! My band have played with them alot just because he believes in us and really wants to help. . . And jarred gunns… WTF!?

  • Kyle said:

U guys are like children! Threats, character attacks and insults! People are entitled to their opinions, thats why they choose what to buy and listen and support. Attacking ppl isn’t going to make them change there opinion and only strengthens initial comments. Constructive comments alwayas better than flaming wars.

If they don’t like chromiunm, get over it! The sun will still shine tomorrow. N this isn’t an attack on band or jared, theyre actually cool.

  • Grant said:

True, people are entitled to their opinions. I guess that means that everybody who commented also stated their opinions.

  • Jared Gunston said:

each to their own i agree, but i didn’t appreciate someone posing as me, as well as another who doesn’t know me saying i’m arrogant, etc.

thank u my friends, and to the rest, i hope we can share a beer one day, or even a bottle of vodka, and you’ll see the real me!

  • Adam Boyd said:

Jared Gunston rocks, He produced my bands (Wake to wonder)first album.
He really helped us on the way to becoming who we are today, with that album we have gotten huge responses from people overseas and we will be touring that side soon.
Plus he always has time to party with the people he knows, if he doesnt know you then maybe you should make the effort in getting to know him as he is an awesome guy.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion so i dont want to rag you too much about this, but i assume you are someone who has been likes the band but something has occured to make you sour and its not the leaving of Matt.

Anyway peace out, Jaybels is the man!

Slash you are an arrogant asshole and clearly you’ve never worked with Jared. Jared is a machine and at the same time one of the coolest and nicest guys around. Jared treats everyone equally and make’s you feel like a rockstar and makes you sound awesome.

    P.S. Your mom’s calling

  • matt said:

yes this is matt, ex member of chromium, i searched my name on google, (yes i am a vain mother fucker) and who ever knows me knows that, all i am gonna say is this, all of you, GET over it, fuck i left almost 9 months ago, i am happy, chromium is happy. and me and the chromes to my knowlege are getting along just fine, drink together etc, slash, get over it. scream and Basil, thanks for the support

sorry i read this for the first time and lold, seriously. if you have nothing to do vut tune a band. fuck off. truth.
i am happy. chrome is happy, if you wanna see me, see my new band, if you wanna see chromium, watch them. if neither appeals then fuck off. you might be “showing support by tuning” but I dont benifet from it, these were almost life long friends of mine. and the decision was made to benefit everyone involved. none of you were involed except the four of us. so keep your opinions to yourself. sorry i founded chromium along with jared so it is still dear to my heart, and you guys tuning doesnt help. thats all,

and to prove its me, a statement i say that they will know

    i dont give a fuck :)

after reading chromium and various other band’s responses to this, i can say one thing…i’ll never buy any of ur albums or pay to watch u again.ur all just a bunch of children that cant handles criticism. hv u ever seen another band get involved over a few bad comments? no. sorry, uv lost a fan for life and i’ll be sure to tell all my friends about this.

  • Grant said:

Well Aaron. It actually seems like you’re the child in this case. You can’t be such a big Chromium fan anyway if something like this that wasn’t even their fault to begin with is going to affect your opinion on their music. But your opinion is your opinion. I think this has all been resolved anyway if you read Jared’s interview in response to this and Matt’s comment.

  • oli said:

I’m glad Jared’s boyfriends came to his rescue..

  • Grant said:

Ha ha. You’re a regular comedian.

  • oli said:

    Why so pissy, Grant?

  • slash said:

Oli he probably spammed all his friends to comment here so he can feel better about himself

  • Jordan said:

I find it funny that people are judging the band by their own perceptions and more than one person is saying “I’m not going to buy your music or listen to you guys live again”.

As a fan I can say… so what? 2 or 3 people don’t make a difference. If you ever liked them in the first place you would have liked them for their music, the rest comes secondary. Its like the fans that start hating Metallica because of one substandard album. Pointless, selfish and childish.

If you ever liked the music, you aren’t going to change your opinion because of some inaccurate perception of band politics. If you are, then chances are you never liked the music, anyway. In which case the band doesn’t care about you, because you aren’t a real fan. Bands don’t go places off of “semi-fans”, so good riddance, I say. I hope you find a group of musicians that don’t have to deal with differences during the course of their careers, to listen to. I heard Scottish bagpipe or pan pipe ensembles are usually quite good in this department. We’re talking about metal, we’re talking about rock. Things will change, progress, whatever you want to call it. I defy any band or fan (not just relating to Chromium) to prove otherwise. Ranting “I’ll boycott your band” just shows how affected by this, you are. Its not unlike a child tantrum over a chocolate bar he isn’t going to get.
