Review: Muse – The Resistance
Sergio reviews Muse’s The Resistance.
Artist Name: Muse
Album Name: The Resistance
Year: 2009
Genre: Alternative Rock
A lot of negative criticism has been directed at Muse’s The Resistance. Mind you, when your band is Muse and you include more electronic influences than signature guitar work in your release, you do kind of paint a bull’s eye on yourself. Sadly though, the current trend in music is deeply rooted in electronic sounds – so if you wish to blame or retaliate against anyone in specific, please go kick Timbaland’s ass for this atrocious fad.
Throughout the duration of the album, one thought keeps resonating– not a single song is timeless or possesses the Muse replay value we’ve all been accustomed to. While the record is by no means boring or sluggish, it just doesn’t possess the ‘Stockholm Syndrome’, ‘Hysteria’ or even ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ quality, which always finds its way onto every iTunes playlist. The only track that barely stands out is the grandiose, Queen-inspired, ‘United States of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage)’; otherwise it’s just a step above a yawn-athon.
Under no circumstances is The Resistance a terrible album, it’s just not great by Muse’s standards. Perhaps, we’ve just been too spoiled by their near flawless albums, and were always going to be judgemental of any “different” releases. I’d strongly recommend buying a song or two before purchasing the entire album.
Best Tracks: ‘Uprising’ and ‘United States of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage)’
63/100

Somehow I’d lived for 10 years without ever fully experiencing Muse until late 2009. Not sure how they flew under my radar all that time! Last fall, my wife and I were watching VH1′s Top 20 Countdown and we caught ‘Uprising’ – shortly thereafter, we heard it on ads for ABC’s ‘V’ and such. I loved it enough to download ‘The Resistance’ and we very quickly came to love this album. Since then we’ve been going backwards thru their catalog and loving just about everything we hear. While I agree that ‘The Resistance’ is not their very best, I rank it well above a ‘yawn-a-thon’ – perhaps because I heard and loved this one before I heard the rest of their output. Wonderful music, wonderful band! Peace.
I have to disagree with this review. Yawn a thon? This is my favourite Muse album? i have listened to it over and over again and have never once yawned! it relly makes me angry when people dont accept change. They cant do the same music all over again, every artist has to move with the times and thats exactly what Muse are doing. They’re music has always included a certain ammount of electronic sounds and that in fact is exactly the reason i bacame a fan in the first place.
An excellent album that truly shows off the immense talents of these musicians especially Matthew Bellamy!
