Review: Research Turtles – Self-Titled
Bret reviews the very impressive debut album of the Research Turtles.

Artist Name: Research Turtles
Album Name: Self-Titled
Year: 2009
Genre: Garage/Indie Rock
Research Turtles’ Self-Titled album is in a calibre of its own. Yep, the British Invasion reached an American Garage band, and damn, does it sound good! In what appears to be a Brit-Indie-meets-Campus-Rock-meets-Garage approach, the Research Turtles impress with each track leaving me with a burning afterthought. Why is this band unsigned?
From the mellow and soothing ‘Let’s Get Carried Away’, to the genius of ‘Cement Floor’, I’m sold. Diversely inspired guitar riffs, solid drumming and bass and flawless vocals characterise an album which is well-worth a second listen. Even the packaging and contents of the parcel these guys sent me screams professionalism and style (link to follow). Seriously, I may sound like a groupie, but this album is really impressive.
Okay, okay; I know what you are thinking, so nice stuff out the way, where does this album disappoint? Unfortunately, there are moments in ‘Damn’, ‘Tomorrow’ and others which make me feel like I’m stuck watching a teen-comedy, such as the likes of American Pie. What this implies is that the Campus Rock overtone is perhaps too dominant at times and acts to detract from that Garage-meets-Indie flavour which makes this album that much more memorable.
Best Tracks: ‘Cement Floor’, ‘The Riff Song’, ‘Let’s Get Carried Away’, ‘Kiss Her Goodbye’
83/100
