Artist Name: Paul Stanley
Album Name: Live to Win
Year: 2006
Genre: Rock

When I first heard the title single, ‘Live to Win’, I thought it was exactly what contemporary rock needed – a swift kick up the musical ass by the living legend, Paul Stanley. The track epitomises everything that rock should be about: melody, strong vocals, rhythm, and great guitar work.

Stanley’s lyrics haven’t changed much since his KISS days. The style and content are similar, but more passionate – as most of the tracks are about love and the great feeling of being alive. Live to Win was recorded right after Stanley got married, therefore that might’ve influenced the general tone of the album. Personally, I think it’s good to see a rock album that is passion-ridden and portrays a positive message – instead of being all about chaos and death.

The musicianship on this album is absolutely top notch, featuring guest appearances by huge names, such as Bruce Kulick, John 5, and Andreas Carlsson. Oozing a grandiose sound, the string arrangements and the variety of instruments give the album a powerfully layered, melodic sound. Stanley also took on the responsibility of playing most of the instruments and was heavily involved in the production of the album; therefore the overall sound of the album is of the highest quality.

Live to Win will appeal to KISS fans and general lovers of rock. While it does contain many ballads, which may deter a few people, I’d still say it’s definitely worth a listen. The only real shortfall of the album is unfortunately the length – 33 minutes is way too short! Yikes!

Best Tracks: ‘Live To Win’, ‘Lift’, and ‘Bulletproof’

Rating: 72/100
