The Durex Ultimate Battle – the Finals Approach!
Since April 2009 to date, a nationwide search has been underway for South Africa’s top emerging live performing band. The 5th Durex Ultimate Battle has scoured the country, visited twenty towns and watched 120 bands perform their hearts out. The prelims filtered down to semi-finals held in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and East London earlier this year.
Finally the competition has boiled down to 11 contestants; all ready to compete for first prize on the 2nd of April at Cool Runnings in Bloubosrand.
B.E.E. – E.L., Beyond the Pale – KZN, Columbia’s Finest – JHB, Deathlikedaisies – Somerset West, Fox Comet – CPT, Friday Beyond – PTA, Groundstar – JHB, Legions Ablaze – JHB, Revenge on Murphy – Middleburg , Spank – JHB and Tree Houses On The Sea – Kwa-Zulu Natal.
The music styles and backgrounds of each band vary. The final battle will see commercial rock bands compete against deathcore, nu metal, punk rock, funk rock, ska, hip hop and blues influenced bands. A massive variation of sounds to make the judge’s jobs even harder.
The bands are judged by a wide panel of music industry judges from all aspects of the industry. The key criterion for judges is that they may not judge on music style and their main focus is to imagine the band in a live music scenario. Different judges vote on different categories such as audience interaction, performance, musicality, technical prowess, marketing ability, audience votes and a general category on organiser interaction and general understanding of the rules.
There can only be one winner on the night and with eleven amazing new bands, judges, artistes and audience are in for an emotional rollercoaster.
The Durex Ultimate Battle presents the winning band with a host of prizes to assist them in their live music careers. R10000 in cash, a branded tour trailer, CD’s, merchandise, music vouchers from Music Connection, branded drum and guitar bags from Billy’s Music, clothing from Faded Blak, professional bio from The Write Crew, music business training sessions, additional branded gear from Super Star Stuff, the opportunity to perform on high level festivals and support international artistes, a nationally coordinated tour and an optional agency signing to Authentic Ideas.
2nd of April will be the day where hundreds of hearts beat in hope, pause in anticipation and in some cases roar with delight whilst others wilt in disappointment. Regardless of the outcome, with the additional staging, sound and lighting being brought in to transform Cool Runnings into an even better concert venue; the evening is set to be one to be remembered for a long time to come.
