Review: Spirytus – Self-Titled

15 April 2010 4 Comments

Sergio reviews Spirytus’ self-titled debut.

Spirytus

Artist Name: Spirytus
Album Name: Spirytus
Year: 2010
Genre: Metal

Sounding like the bastard offspring of Korn, Faith No More, and Killswitch Engage, Spirytus are set for world domination with the release of their eponymous debut.

Having already had their 15 minutes of fame thanks to Fred Durst and Limp Bizkit, the boys from Nottingham have taken hold of fate’s helping hand and gone into the studio to prove that their moment in the limelight was heavily merited.

Produced by Jason Wilcock, the album is relentless as it machine-guns your senses with a formidable macho metal sneer that’s bound to incite riots and kick teeth in – probably unbeknown to the band, the title of the first single ‘Bullet Ride’ is actually a pretty accurate description of the entire album. It just oozes dripping guitar tones, fast-paced drumming, behemoth amounts of bass, and god-like vocals – rumour has it that vocalist Ryan Walton actually broke through a few sound barriers (and microphones) in the process of recording his vocal tracks.

Spirytus is an educated revisit to the era of face-melting metal, yet entrenched with enough melody pills and unique charisma to drop panties – think of early Fear Factory material as an example. While never compromising on aggression, the heaviness is still done tastefully without the need of pointless sections of “heavy for the sake of heavy”, as is the current trend in metal.

In the words of the infamous Richie Rich parody on Robot Chicken, “You better put on a helmet, before this blows your mind!” Spirytus are no longer contenders – they are the next breed of heavy metal!

Best Tracks: ‘Bullet Ride’, ‘Heaven Hates You’, and ‘You Don’t Know’

89/100
