Review: Prelude To June – My Blessing – My Curse
Sergio reviews Prelude to June’s My Blessing – My Curse.
Artist Name: Prelude to June
Album Name: My Blessing – My Curse
Year: 2010
Genre: Hard Rock/Metal
Combining metal, punk and hard rock, Prelude to June have released their debut full-length album My Blessing – My Curse.
Upon first listen, it’s apparent that these boys are still listening to 90s rock/metal – prior to Limp Bizkit and the whole Nu Metal explosion. The grunge influence on the record is extremely obvious as ‘Sand Castles’ bares a striking resemblance to Saron Gas’ Fragile era; although there are a lot more old school riffs than the general distorted/clean power-chords pattern.
Vocalist/guitarist Ashley Lane doesn’t shy away from singing melodies that add authentic character to the songs, instead of the regular screaming through a ProTool plug-in. However, I do find that he tries to imitate Shaun Morgan from Seether quite a bit, and he really doesn’t need to, as the best vocal tracks, such as ‘Vampire’ and ‘Watching Worlds Crumble’, are where he lets his true “self” shine through.
You can’t help but find a place in your heart for Prelude to June. Even though the recording quality isn’t always the greatest and some sections do go on for far too long, you have to admire this band’s passion and DIY ethic. My Blessing – My Curse shows that Prelude to June have the potential to go very far.
Best Tracks: ‘How The Story Ends’, ‘Watching Worlds Crumble’ and ‘Vampire’
65/100
