Review: Cancer Bats – Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones
Sergio reviews Cancer Bats’ Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones.
Artist Name: Cancer Bats
Album Name: Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones
Year: 2010
Genre: Hardcore Punk
I’m pretty sure Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones has caught most people’s attention due to the hardcore cover of the Beastie Boys’ ‘Sabotage’, which takes the original 1994 rapcore song to a whole new level of destruction. However, I must stress that ‘Sabotage’ is only a snippet of the amount of power the Cancer Bats are delivering with their latest album – it’s the perfect soundtrack for a showdown between Davy Crockett and a bear.
As soon as ‘Sleep This Away’ kicks in, you know you’re going to lose teeth and blood. Liam Cormier has one of the most vicious voices I’ve ever heard – kind of like a cough mixture of barbed wire and lighter fluid – and he never fails to uppercut the listener with tenacious vocal hooks at every opportunity.
Whether it’s the sludgy guitar sections or riff-tastic southern metal pieces, the main strength of Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones is the ability to deliver grooves amongst the anarchy. You could easily dance or slam-dance to songs, such as ‘Dead Wrong’ or ‘Scared To Death’ – nonetheless, I wouldn’t recommend buying this album for a David Guetta fan…
Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones is chaotic – but in a good “let’s party” kind of way. It’s extremely heavy and brutal, so you best put on a helmet because this album is going to blow your mind!
Best Tracks: ‘Dead Wrong’, ‘Scared To Death’, and ‘Fake Gold’
82/100
