Chromium Part Ways With Bassist

10 August 2010 7 Comments

Chromium announce the departure of bassist Shaun Pearson from their ranks.

The band posted the following message:

Chromium would like to take a moment to thank Shaun Pearson for his involvement in the band. You became a crucial part of the band and have made your mark as an unforgettable part of the band’s history, as well as a great friend for life. We wish you luck on your adventures and hope you become the best chef you can.

Louis (Knave’s bassist) will be helping us out for the next few months and then an old friend, Adrian Basson, is on his way back up to JHB to rejoin the band in November.

Earlier this year, founding guitarist/vocalist, Matt Engelbrecht, left the band for undisclosed reasons, and is now a member of Knave.

Matt was fired??? I knew this band was going to suck after he left!!!

    I thought Adrian played bass?

    but true with andy’s comment.

I wouldnt go as far as to say suck, but you lost a Vital part of the band when matt left, now when i read fired, makes me think how silly you must feel that chromium is no where near as great or popular anymore, and he’s moved on to better things.

i see the next album as trying to hard to be heavy to prove a point that you still have that fire but then falling short with no decent vocals to back up.

the fans have moved on. and thats the sad truth of this industry. they loved you for what you were. but when you lose that much of a presence you might as well change the band name.

No slander from this side, just stating obvious facts from alot of talks and observations.

I think Jared was in a hurry when he wrote that so didn’t explain fully. I work very closely with the band and am a good friend with them, so here’s what I can tell you.

Point 3 should read Adrian moves to Bass. Essentially Chromium have only changed one member since they came up to Joburg (essentially the first point anyone really knew about them) nearly 5 years ago now. Matt left because of differences (which I cannot go further into), essentially that means fired but it wasn’t as ruthless as that, it was a process. If you knew the internal workings of the bands (and I’m not at liberty to divulge) then you would know that, that decision helped both Matt and Chromium out.

Shaun reluctantly left because he was worried about what would happen to his career which he has spent years on building. This has nothing to do with Chromium politics and was unavoidable for both Shaun and Chromium.

To put this into perspective try and name a heavy band that hasn’t had more than one line-up change in its past.

On the other hand I listen to Confessions of a Hero and Intro Spectre and both are amazing albums with Matt clearly being one of the main attraction points. Matt’s scream is timeless, no doubt. I’ve also heard about 15 demos on which the new album will be based with Justin on scream vocals and guitar. I can tell you two things. The guitar work is better (hard to tell whether Justin or Jared are the main influence for that) and Justin, who doesn’t so much roar as outright scream does a fine job. The new stuff is better overall. Chromium really have pushed forward a long way since Confessions. I wish you guys could hear something to show you what I mean.
