Review: Disco Biscuits – Planet Anthem
Sergio reviews the Disco Biscuits’ Planet Anthem.
Artist Name: Disco Biscuits
Album Name: Planet Anthem
Year: 2010
Genre: Trance Fusion/Electronica
Unique. That is the only word I can use to describe Disco Biscuits’ latest effort Planet Anthem. They define their sound as “trance fusion”; well, it certainly is a fusion of multiple genres – not just trance.
In the past, the Disco Biscuits have often been depicted as a jam band who would much rather play live than go into the studio and craft a complementing album – which is why this record kind of came out of nowhere and blew people away. Going against the grain, Planet Anthem isn’t a linear album that follows one specific direction or idea, but rather a compilation of genre-transcending – perhaps even ambiguous – tunes. In fact, as the tracks change over, you might just be left stunned as a mainstream pop-saturated track, such as ‘On Time’, will be instantaneously nullified by an unexpected electro-rock number (‘You and I’) or the tribal beats of ‘Konkrete’. This metamorphosis is also done tastefully and without any glitches – the producers certainly worked their magic behind the mixing board!
Serious clubbers will enjoy the depth and dimension of Planet Anthem; as it’s not dunked in the essence of douche and decorated with glowsticks, square-toes, tribal tattoos and white vests. Open-minded lovers of rock, hip hop, trance, electro and pop will also find this album equally unique and satisfying. Completely original and an excellent companion for long road-trips.
Best Tracks: ‘You and I’, ‘The City’, and ‘Konkrete’
85/100
