Sergio reviews The Bouncing Souls’ Ghosts on the Boardwalk.

Artist Name: The Bouncing Souls
Album Name: Ghosts on the Boardwalk
Year: 2010
Genre: Punk Rock

Punk doesn’t always have to be serious; it can also be a helluva lot of fun and still be credible – just ask The Bouncing Souls. For 23 years, the New Jersey-based band have been playing their light-hearted version of punk rock to anyone willing to listen. And with the release of Ghosts on the Boardwalk, they’ve continued to build on their two decades worth of work with another exciting release.

If you’re tired of saving the dolphins and overthrowing governments (shit, I might get into trouble for that comment), Ghosts on the Boardwalk is the fun-filled solution for a skanking good time. The anthemic ‘We All Sing Along’ will surely be a favourite amongst teenagers (as it gives off that ‘Scotty Doesn’t Know’ party vibe), while the good times certainly roll with the nostalgic harmonica tune in ‘The Mental Bits’ – it’s the kind of track to be shared as you cook marshmallows over a warm fire in the woods with all your best friends.

One track that really shines above them all is the eternal ‘Never Say Die/When You’re Young’, which provides some inspirational words for the younger generation. You’ll immediately notice that it’s divided into two parts, but after a few listens you will understand how it actually moulds everything together, especially the poignant words. To be honest, it gives me the lift I need on those gloomy, pay-the-accounts days.

Many critics refer to TBS as “pogo punk” and I have to concur. It’s fun, entertaining and exceptionally bouncy. While suicidal emo kids may reject its upbeat nature and positive outlook, Ghosts on the Boardwalk is worthy of a purchase and numerous amounts of repeated play.

Best Tracks: ‘Never Say Die/When You’re Young’, ‘The Mental Bits’, and ‘We All Sing Along’

78/100
