Review: Monte Pittman – Pain, Love & Destiny
“Pain, Love & Destiny features a little bit of this and whole lot of that…”
Artist Name: Monte Pittman
Album Name: Pain, Love & Destiny
Year: 2011
Genre: Rock
Label: Independent
Monte Pittman, renowned for being the guitarist for Madonna and Prong, has just released his second solo album, Pain, Love & Destiny, which was funded entirely by his fans via the Kickstarter project.
Favouring strong songwriting and narratives over excessive guitar showmanship, Pittman shows his musical astuteness in creating an album that can be savoured by all, as opposed to just the guitar junkies. Visiting the eras of classic rock, stadium rock, alternative rock and even the ballad world, Pittman shifts through the gears effortlessly, as he deals with 3 major themes: finding the positive in the negative, crossroads, and accepting your fate (no matter if it’s good or bad). Never repetitive and always stimulating, Pain, Love & Destiny features a little bit of this and whole lot of that, reaching its highest points on the unforgettable ‘Lost’, the slow-burning ‘(I Am) The Black Rabbit’ and the Beatles-spiced ‘Predetermined Destiny’. Pittman puts on a master class of rock through the ages, and young guitarists could learn a thing or a hundred from how he composes his songs.
Passionate, resonating and captivating, Pain, Love & Destiny is a fantastic offering from one of modern rock’s guitar heroes. Certainly worth checking out.
Best Tracks: ‘Lost’, ‘(I Am) The Black Rabbit’, and ‘Predetermined Destiny’
