Outside the New

The meaning of the word ‘definition’ states: A definition of something is the act of determining the limits – with this in mind the existence of Outside The New began with a name – something impossible to define or place limitations on – the name ‘Outside The New’ conjures up no preconceived idea of how the music will sound, this is a dogma that OTN willingly inject into the music above all …

Any member of Outside the New upon being asked which genre of music they belong to generally has the same reaction: confusion – followed by mild panic followed by the answer ’fusion’ usually accompanied by a slight grin and glint in the eye, they admit completely, as an answer it’s a bit of a cop-out…

It is said that all people are a sum of their influences but never the product of just one, instead – an end result of many different outlooks and experiences that are harnessed and result in a completely unique individual, the same can be said for Outside The New. Every note passes through their collective ears and comes out as something unique yet somehow familiar. Looking at their cited influences will result in a diverse list – Dr Dre’, Metallica, The Dave Matthews Band, Herbie Hancock,
Slipknot, Linkin Park, John Coltrane, OutKast, Miles Davis, DJ Krush, Jimi Hendrix, The Police, Eazy-E,
Funkadelic, Tool, Jamiroquai, John Legend and Sound Garden… just to name a few, the list continues but gives a good indication of how the end result is achieved firmly grounded in Hip-hop, Jazz and
Rock but with many hints of other influences.

OTN had a more than humble start around 6 years ago practicing in an office block on Saturday afternoons – the band at this stage had three young wide eyed member’s and consisted of Andrew on bass, Darren on drums and Ian on guitars. The practices would last several hours and then additionally however many beers the guys had scrounged together. Inevitably more people were drawn to / recruited by the band with various temporary members coming and going or moving onto greener pastures, but with each permanent addition the musical direction started to shift, notably with DJ Wetbone (Gez) on turn tables who then also assumed emcee duties and Jason who joined in the capacity of sound engineer and producer. Eventually with the addition of Duane on vocals and saxophone and Tyrone on guitar, OTN finally felt that the sound was full and they were ready to introduce their unique brand of fusion to South Africa and the world.

Currently the band are playing in and around Johannesburg, and are in studio recording their first album.
